Get your day started with this densely nutrient-rich chocolate smoothie, packed with fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Chocolate is the highest antioxidant food in the world, especially raw cacao (raw chocolate, not processed cocoa). Antioxidants help to fight free radicals that damage our DNA and can cause cancer (Katz, et al., 2011).
Some of the longest living people in the world have eaten a lot of chocolate in their lifetimes. Google this and you can find many Centenarians who have sworn that chocolate helped them live longer. This is my go-to morning smoothie when I know it’s going to be a busy day, and I always include leafy greens in my smoothies, but don’t worry – you’ll taste that chocolately goodness! Let’s make it and start sippin’.
Recipe:
-
- 1 banana (best to peel, chop up, place in a ziplock, and freeze first)
-
- 3 tbsp. organic cacao powder, or 1 scoop of this heart healthy cardio cocoa powder
-
- 1 tsp ceylon cinnamon (this helps to regulate blood glucose and studies show other types of cinnamon can be harsh on the liver)
-
- 1/2 tsp cardamom powder (this helps with digestion)
-
- 2 tbsp. of chocolate collagen powder. (I spoke with this Vital Proteins company since there’s a lead warning on this product, but I look on the California government website for the warning and found that it was a negligible/tiny amount and this is still a top selling collagen powder in America. It really makes this smoothie taste amazing too.)
-
- tiny pinch of sea salt (optional)
-
- 1/4 cup frozen blueberries
-
- 2 handfuls freshly washed baby spinach (don’t worry, you won’t taste the spinach almost at all)
-
- *Blend and enjoy!

Macronutrients / Calories in this recipe:
1 medium sized banana has about 105 calories, 27g carbs, 0.4g fat, and 1.3g protein. Bananas contain special enzymes, healthy carbs, and potassium. New research may suggest that bananas MIGHT decrease the antioxidant levels in other foods like berries and Extra Virgin Olive Oil since bananas contain an enzyme called Polyphenol Oxidase (so if this is confirmed, I may not add bananas to my smoothies anymore). Potassium has an INVERSE relationship with sodium (they balance each other).
3 tbsp cacao powder has 72 calories, 9.6g carbs, 1.8g fat, 4.8g protein. Cacao (not cocoa) is low heated, less processed chocolate and raw cacao is the highest antioxidant food in the world! It is the food of longevity / anti-aging.
Cinnamon, Cardomom, and all spices have a negligible amount of everything, close to 0. They are high in antioxidants for cellular protection and antimicrobial properties. Ceylon Cinnamon is easier on the liver, and helps to balance blood sugar.
2 tbsp Vital Proteins brand Collagen Powder in chocolate has about 40 calories, 1g carb, 0g fat, and 8g protein. As we age we lose collagen, so I like to replace mine. However, more research needs to be conducted by scientists to know if adding collagen to the body is used by the body to build more collagen in bones, ligaments, skin, etc. This is also a great way to add more protein to a recipe!
Sea salt has a negligible amount of macros, close to 0. It is high in electrolytes like sodium and chloride.
1/4 cup blueberries has 18 calories, 4.2g carbs, 0.2g fat, 0g protein. Blueberries are important for brain cognition, and is packed with special blue anthocyanin and polyphenol antioxidants for cellular protection.
2 handfuls of baby spinach has roughly 27 calories, 4g carbs, 0g fat, and 2.7g protein. Spinach is high in magnesium, iron, copper, and helps to alkaline the body.
