Eating Your Way to Wellness: Benefits of Science-Backed Superfoods

Maintaining a balanced diet is the cornerstone of optimal health. Luckily, nature has provided us with an abundance of magical substances that offers flavor and phenomenal benefits for the human body. In this blog, let’s delve deeper into a list of the superfoods, superherbs, medicinal mushrooms, and spices that are scientifically-backed by research to provide essential micro- and macronutrients. These foods also support detoxification, feeds healthy gut bacteria, provides energy, and promotes longevity (anti-aging). Just think – if nature gives us all of this, plus in modern times we have online shopping, quick delivery, etc. which makes it possible to have these substances year-round, why would we want to do the opposite and cause self-harm to our bodies by eating fast-food, processed food, and added sugars?

If you want to skip all the reading and instead just see some of the best superfood products I use often, scroll to the bottom of this page to see the links in blue. I recommend you read about each item first though, and consult with your healthcare provider (see disclaimer below).

Continuation of blog..

People say they eat donuts, burgers, cereal, candy, french fries, etc., “because it tastes good, because of the flavor.” Is that all? REAL food also tastes good, has no artificial flavors and chemicals that make our taste buds addicted, is much lower in calories (so you can eat more of it), and is filled with fiber (so you have regular bowel movements and the healthy gut bacteria is happy since fiber feeds them, which makes us happier). Real food slows aging (whereas added, processed sugars and processed foods speed up aging and ruins collagen overtime much faster). Organic food allows us to see faster physical fitness results (because the body recognizes real food). Yet, many people would rather go to the gym, stay only on the cardio machines instead of picking up the resistance training tools (weights), and then go eat unhealthy food, or skip meals and then they ask, “Why am I not seeing better results? I’ve been working out for years now.” My opinion: It’s a viscious cycle and a waste of time.

If you approach health and wellness the right way, put in the discipline it takes to control your cravings to control self harm with bad food, alcohol, added refined sugars, smoking, etc. – then you can truly master anything else you want in life. Anything worth having takes discipline and none of it comes easily. We have so much information at our disposal, so many different diets out there, and too many options make it harder to figure out which path is the best. Let’s take it back to simple, organic, real food and how humans stayed in shape decades ago through movement and eating real calories (not empty calories).

Taste buds are re-trainable, they aren’t fixed. Scientists determine it takes about 2-3 weeks for taste buds to become adapted to new flavors. I personally used to eat a lot of fast food like Taco Bell, Wendy’s, McDonalds, Burger King, etc. and I drank soda daily. After retraining my taste buds by sticking through the discipline it took to only eat unprocessed, organic foods, even a bite of one donut for example, tastes horrible and I can now detect all the artificial chemicals in it. Anyone can do this. Your body inside and out will thank you for it!

At the end of this blog, you’ll find a list of some of my favorite superfood items that I get regularly on Amazon. Click on the links in the list to see current deals for each item on Amazon. Happy nourishing!

Fiber-Rich and Nutrient-Dense Vegetables and Legumes:

Lentils, black beans, kidney beans, chickpeas, and other legumes are packed with fiber and plant-protein. They are rich in iron, magnesium, copper, zinc, and help keep our digestive system functional. Cabbage, carrots, kale, spinach, chard, broccoli, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts contain a diverse range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to support overall health. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower offer cancer-fighting compounds!

Ocean Treasures and Green Grasses:

Seaweeds like spirulina and chlorella pack a powerful punch to nutrition. They help to detoxify the body while supporting immune health. They are high in chlorophyll (“plant blood”) which gives plants their green color and alkalizes our blood. Spirulina is a blue-green type of algae that is rich in copper, iron, protein, and B-vitamins. It helps to manage blood sugar, blood pressure, inflammation, maintain cellular regulation and cell energy, and provides brain-protective properties. Wheatgrass is hailed for its chlorophyll content, its energy-boosting potential, and digestive benefits. Fennel and artichoke are also known for their digestive benefits and make great additions to any meal.

Healthy Fats and Delights:

Avocados, olives, Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO), and fatty fish rich in fish oil are heart-healthy, brain-healthy sources of monounsaturated fats. They provide energy, satiety, and support the body’s absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, K. High quality fish oil that has been tested for mercury is crucial for a healthy brain and heart, because of its rich Omega 3 content from Eicosapentanoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexanoic Acid (DHA). Some studies show that EPA may help prevent Alzheimer’s Disease as it has been linked to help with long-term memory. Coconuts and nuts like almonds, cashews, Brazil nuts, pistachios, walnuts, and macadamia nuts offer a powerhouse of healthy fats, proteins, and minerals. All of these foods are scientifically linked to better brain health, reduced inflammation, and may extend human lifespans.

Small but Mighty Berries and Seeds:

Chia seeds, flaxseeds, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds are brimming with Alpha Linoleic Acid (ALA) omega 3 fats, a type of omega 3 that comes from plants, not fish. These seeds are also packed with fiber and energy! Chia seeds are rich in calcium, and all of these seeds provide healthy amounts of iron, magnesium, and zinc. Hemp seeds are higher in protein. Pumpkin seeds have been scientifically linked to maintaining prostate health.

Berries, I can’t say enough about berries! They aid in digestion, they lower cholesterol, support energy levels, provide healthy amounts of organic sugars, contain vitamin C, and are packed with antioxidants to fight off free radicals that damage our DNA and cells. Berries helps us combat oxidative stress, therefore, slows down the aging process and reduces inflammation. Check out my superfood recipes which always contains berries.

Spices, Roots, and Medicinal Mushrooms: Nature’s Pharmacy

Turmeric, a vibrant golden spice used in India’s rich curries, it is known as the world’s most powerful anti-inflammatory of all spices, due to its active compound curcumin. Turmeric stains fabrics/clothing so be careful! You’ll notice most turmeric supplements contain black pepper extract, which helps our bodies absorb the curcumin compound. If you’re eating Indian food though, it definitely has enough pepper, including black pepper to help absorb the turmeric in the curry.

Ashwagandha and Maca Root are powerful adaptogens (they help the body adapt to the demands/stress placed on it). I personally take 1 tsp of Ashwagandha and Maca Root power every morning in my green tea, with a Medicinal Mushroom blend. I can feel the difference when I cycle off of it for a few weeks. Ashwagandha specifically, helps me manage stress better and improves my mental focus and clarity. Maca Root is one of the highest growing crops in the world, at some of the highest altitudes, and helps us to intake more oxygen when we’re at high altitude levels or anywhere! It’s rich in iron and gives us a boost of energy that’s stable throughout the day.

Holy Basil, peppermint, rosemary, and cloves are just a few wonderful herbs that are not only culinary delights, but provides antioxidants and anti-microbial benefits.

Ceylon Cinnamon regulates blood glucose levels and provides a natural, light sweetness without sugar. Ceylon Cinnamon specifically is easier on the liver than other types of cinnamon according to research.

Shilajit is an Ayurvedic herb, just like Turmeric, which helps us fight off inflammation, boost brain health, and protects our cells from damaging free radicals.

Astragalus Root offers immune boosting properties, prevents colds and upper respiratory infections, helps with diabetes, and protects the liver.

Medicinal Mushrooms I can’t say enough about and they deserve their own blog, which you can read by clicking on here. They are fungi studied for their bioactive compounds which support a plethora of health aspects and overall well-being. Included are: Reishi, Chaga, Lion’s Mane, Turkey Tail, Cordyceps, Shiitake, Maitake, and Agaricus Blazei mushrooms. It’s important to note:  although these mushrooms offer promising health benefits, individual responses can vary and it’s important to consult with your doctor first, before trying anything new mentioned in this blog. Advise with your healthcare professional, as this blog is only for informational purposes and is not providing medical advise to anyone. Consider reputable suppliers to ensure quality and safety as well.

In conclusion, remember – achieving optimal health is about finding balance and vitality through a variety of organic foods from earth, movement through daily exercise, quality sleep, and working on mental health as well. This blog is a roadmap to creating meals containing healthy, real, and powerful foods, herbs, and spices. As you embark on your wellness journey, these scientifically backed superfoods can be your allies and in becoming a healthier, more vibrant you.
